Single-motor desks are cheaper (~$250 vs. $400+), but the performance difference is stark. If you can stretch the budget, go dual.
Memory Presets
Almost all dual-motor desks include a programmable keypad with 2–4 memory presets. This is one of those features that seems minor until you use it. Being able to switch from sitting height A (with your preferred chair) to standing height B (for your anti-fatigue mat) with one button press makes you much more likely to actually change positions throughout the day.

Anti-Collision Technology
Anti-collision sensors detect when the desk hits an obstacle during lowering (a chair arm, a storage box, a cat) and reverse direction. This is important for safety and for protecting your equipment. All the desks we recommend have it, but sensitivity varies.

Standing Schedule: How Often Should You Stand?
The research suggests a 1:1 or 2:1 sitting-to-standing ratio throughout the day. Start with standing for 15–20 minutes every hour and gradually increase. Standing for more than 2 hours straight isn't recommended — it shifts strain from your lower back to your legs and feet.
Most people settle into a rhythm of 45 minutes sitting, 30 minutes standing, repeated throughout the workday. Listen to your body — if your legs ache, switch to sitting. If your back stiffens, switch to standing.
Common Mistakes When Choosing a Desk
1. Buying too small. People consistently underestimate the surface area they need. A 48" desk that seems huge in the store feels tiny once you add a monitor, keyboard, mouse pad, phone, and a notebook. Always size up if you have room.
2. Ignoring height range. "I'm average height, so a standard desk should fit." Standard desk height (29") is designed for someone 5'10". If you're 5'7" or 6'1", you're out of ideal range. Check the math.
3. Forgetting about cables. You will have more cables than you think. By the time you plug in your monitor(s), computer, desk lamp, phone charger, USB hub, and speakers, you'll have at least 8 cables to manage. Make sure your desk has grommets and a cable tray, or budget for aftermarket cable management.
4. Prioritizing looks over function. A glass-top desk looks sleek. It also shows every speck of dust, smudges instantly, and is cold to the touch in winter. A white laminate desk looks clean but shows scuffs. Consider your actual usage patterns before choosing the aesthetic option.
5. Not accounting for monitor arms. If you're planning to use monitor arms (and you should be), the desk needs to have an edge that accommodates clamp-on mounts. Some desks have a beveled or molded edge that prevents a C-clamp from gripping properly. If you're buying a fixed desk, check that the edge is flat and at least 1" thick where the clamp will go.
6. Buying a standing desk with too little height range. Some budget standing desks top out at 45" or 46", which is too low for a 6' person standing straight. Check the max height against your standing elbow height before you buy.
7. Assuming "one height fits all." If you share your desk with a partner or family member who's a different height, you absolutely need an adjustable desk. There is no fixed height that works for two people of different statures.
8. Ignoring the chair. Your desk and chair form a system. Buying the perfect desk and then pairing it with a $100 office chair misses the point. Budget for both. A good starting point is a roughly 2:1 budget split — spend twice as much on a quality ergonomic chair as on the desk frame (you'll probably keep the chair longer).
Setup Tips for Ergonomics and Productivity
Once you've chosen your desk, the way you set it up matters as much as the desk itself. Here's the optimized workflow.
1. Monitor Positioning
Your monitor should be at arm's length, with the top bezel at or slightly below eye level. This keeps your neck in a neutral position. For multi-monitor setups: center your primary screen directly in front of you, and angle secondary screens slightly inward.
If your fixed desk isn't at the perfect height for your monitors, use monitor risers or a monitor arm to adjust. A good monitor arm is one of the best ergonomic investments you can make (budget ~$100–$200 for a quality dual-arm).
2. Keyboard and Mouse Placement
Your keyboard and mouse should be on the same surface, at or slightly below elbow height. Your wrists should be straight (not bent up, down, or sideways). If your desk is too high for this, get an under-desk keyboard tray. If it's too low, an ergonomic keyboard with a tilt kit can help.
Don't rest your wrists on a wrist rest while typing — that reduces circulation and increases carpal tunnel pressure. Use the wrist rest only during breaks.
3. Cable Routing

4. Desk Layout: The Primary Zone
Your "primary zone" is the area within easy reach without leaning — roughly a 30" × 24" rectangle centered on your abdomen. Inside this zone: your keyboard, mouse, primary monitor, and your most-used tool (pen, phone, notebook). Everything else goes in the "secondary zone" (within arm's reach but requiring a swivel or slight lean).
This is the 80/20 rule of workspace organization: 80% of your time uses the 20% of surface closest to you. Arrange your desk to respect that.
5. Lighting
Your desk position relative to windows matters. Avoid having a window directly behind your monitor (creates glare on the screen) or directly in front (eye strain from the bright background). Ideally, windows should be to the side at a 45–90° angle.
